High-velocity impact on composite sandwich structures: A theoretical model

Abstract A theoretical energy-based model to capture the ballistic response of sandwich structures made composite material peels and a crushable foam core was developed. The based on wave propagation theory it split in six stages with their corresponding energy-absorption mechanisms. division physical interpretation perforation process involving reasonable hypotheses simplifications. analysed at velocities below, near above limit within all showing general trends terms relative importance. time velocity each stage separately wide range order see contribution energy-absorption. validated against experimental results obtained literature good agreement impact-residual curve.
